Smoking has been proven to be a deadly habit. More people, including teens, are using electronic cigarettes- or e-cigarettes as they are called. Studies have shown more young adults are turning to e-cigarettes, even those that have never smoked before.

An e-cigarette is a battery operated device that converts a liquid chemical called propylene glycol, nicotine, formaldehyde, flavorings and other additives into a vapor that can be inhaled. There are many “fun” flavors available that attract young adults. Fruit punch, peach, strawberry, and mint are but a few of the flavors out there. The contents of e-cigarettes is currently unregulated and some of these additives are know carcinogens.

Hookahs are water pipes with water in the bottom bowl and tobacco product in the top chamber. Hookah cafes are springing up everywhere as a social setting for people, and young adults are flocking to these. Many are opening near college campuses. The risk factors of using a hookah are the same as regular cigarettes. It is not true that these water pipes reduce the toxins. You still inhale them like a traditional cigarette.

Conventional smoking causes many health and dental risks but the risks of e-cigarettes is not yet fully known. More studies are being done. What is known that this habit does put nicotine into your body, which is addictive. Nicotine can harm your teeth, gums, and cause dry mouth.

There are alternatives to smoking. Talk to your dentist or health care professional. There are nicotine patches, sprays, chewing gums/lozenges that can help. Some items require a prescription.
Another method is to focus on relaxing. Many smokers do it to reduce stress. Exercise and being physically active can also help reduce the urge to smoke. Find support from friends and family to be your cheerleader. Quitting the habit is hard, but it is worth it.
